SEMINAR BS2/C8

Healthcare Architecture for Pandemics: A Case Study on COVID-19 Treatment Centers

This semester, we will continue our collaboration with the World Health Organization and work on healthcare architecture with a focus on designing facilities for infectious disease outbreaks. The topic for the Summer Semester (SoSe) will be developing a full setup of a COVID-19 treatment centre. The project will simulate a realistic scenario from the COVID-19 pandemic, where students will be assigned a designated plot for the development of a comprehensive COVID-19 treatment facility, using the WHO's SARI (Severe Acute Respiratory Infections) Treatment Centre manual as the primary reference. This course will provide hands-on experience in applying modular design principles, considering rapid construction methods, and integrating essential features such as proper ventilation systems and flexible spaces. Students will gain insights into the critical design parameters that emerged during the pandemic, including the implementation of infection prevention and control measures. The course will emphasize the importance of evidence-based design in creating effective and adaptable healthcare environments for managing infectious disease outbreaks.
