SEMINAR BS2/C8

Planning and design of healthcare facilities in developing countries

The WiSe 2024/25 seminar, will focus on the role of hospital design in supporting effective outbreak responses, highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The seminar is organized in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Institute for Structural Design, Industrial and Healthcare Construction (IKE). The seminar will explore how hospital layouts can be adapted for better outbreak management, aiming to identify key design principles and planning guidelines. Students will learn about healthcare facility planning and design, with an emphasis on evaluating how hospital environments influence patient outcomes using Evidence-Based Design. The seminar will include case studies using existing hospital floor plans, where students will address real-world architectural challenges. As a final project, students will develop design proposals to partially repurpose a hospital (based on a selected case study) to enhance its ability to respond to outbreaks and pandemics.
